Recycling Scrap Copper From Factories

There are two main methods to recycle scrap copper. These are the first-class recycling, where everything is recycled, including the wire; and second-class recycling, where the scrap copper is separated from the useful copper components.

Separating Unwanted Components

By separating the unwanted copper components, the waste would not be taking up space in landfills. If everyone recycles scrap copper instead of throwing it into the garbage, there will be more space for the good stuff in our landfills.

Two-Step Process

This recycling process is done in two steps. The first step is the separation of the metals from the rest of the scrap, done through a process called electroplating. The unwanted metal is charged with an electric current so that it can be separated from the useful copper atoms. This separates out the unwanted elements from the valuable ones.

The next step of the process is melting the metal back into its original form. In the first step, the scrap copper is separated from the other elements. By placing the metal in an electrolytic bath, the elements are separated from one another and melted. After the process is complete, the metal is allowed to cool and harden. In the second step, the metal is shaped into the shape of the unwanted object or product. This is where things start to get tricky.

When the metal scrap is recycled, copper is melted and moulded into the design desired by the manufacturer. After this is done, the moulds are cooled and set. This is where a new object can be manufactured. This whole process takes time and energy, so that is why most, if not all, manufacturers turn to steel as an alternative to copper. There is also a shortage of scrap copper for other uses, so steel will always be more cost-effective than copper.
